Last week Year 4 found out what life was really like for the Vikings. Here's what some of the pupils had to say: Eliza: On Monday 10 October, a Viking came to visit year 4. He helped us learn more about the Vikings and how they lived. He showed us a boar skin which still had its head! The best part was when he used his Viking axe to cut a melon in half. |

Uma: The Vikings wore simple clothes that they made themselves. You would have to get the stringy part form the flax and twirl it to make thread. The thread was used to weave fabric on a loom. Women wore headscarves, a loose dress, apron and jewellery. Usually brooches made from tortoise shells were worn. Men wore leggings, baggy pants, a tunic and a belt. Viking children wore the same clothes, only smaller! Sofia: In the morning we did a fun Viking Quiz. One thing I found out that interested me was that the North Star was called the Nail. The whole day was great fun. I would like to be a Viking because I like animals. The Vikings brought their animals into the long house during the winter! Maddie: One of the things that I learnt was that if you don't clean sword, it will go rusty. Then it will break easily. He licked his sword to clean it. Urgh! |

Freya: During our Viking Day, we were shown how Viking coins were made. There was a stamp which our visitor hammered on to a round piece of metal. Different patterns like boats, birds and swords were used. The hammer was very loud so I covered my ears! The Viking coins were made from silver and one coin would be worth £25 today. Sophia: Our Viking visitor showed us how to hold a spear and a shield. If you only have one spear, you should never throw it because if you miss, your enemy would throw it back and kill you with your own spear. Caitlin: On our Viking Day, we looked at the places where the Vikings came from – Sweden, Denmark and Norway. We all used the Viking names we had chosen. Mine was Inga. We learnt that the Vikings ruled most of Britain until AD 1066 but some Vikings stayed and settled in Britain. |

Amanda: At the end of our Viking Day, we had a battle using the swords and shields we had made in class. One team were Saxons and the other team were Vikings. We chanted ‘Odin' or ‘Utes' and when the command was given we battled in pairs. No one was hurt! |
